There are reported cases of couples’ arrest by the Nigerian Police, both in Lagos and Ogun states, People & Politics authoritatively gathered.

No fewer than six different couples were said to be arrested since the lockdown has been eased in Lagos State.

Two different couples who pleaded anonymity told People & Politics that they were arrested in different parts of the state despite wearing their nose mask and hand gloves, while going to fend for their family.

The first husband reported that he was in a commercial mini bus when they were stopped by the police around Alagbado. He said the motive of the officers in the vehicle wasn’t known initially. According to him, “We even thought they were laying claim to the road, so we held back conspicuously for them to leave.

“To our dismay, they later showed up and stopped the same bus at Kola. We were directed to the inward part of the route against our Iyana-Ipaja intent.

“Asked our offence, they said we sat too close for comfort. Meanwhile it was just the two of us at the back of the vehicle, but they insisted that we’ve violated the social distance order. I had to let them know that we are a couple showing them our rings and other means of identification, but they insisted we had to be taken to Alausa.

“They drove us down to an unknown area, after which we had to part with some fund before we were released. One of the officers wasn’t comfortable with the development, he advocated for us, but the senior one shut him down.”

In another development, another young couple said due to the rush and unaffordable hike in transport fare by the commuters, they chose to lap themselves, around Ikeja but they were also arrested and they parted with some cash, as all explanations fell on deaf ears.

In Ogun state, though the lockdown has not been eased. A couple told People & Politics that they were going towards Bible College Bus-Stop from Odo-Eja on a commercial motorcycle while the officers stopped them and asked if they aren’t aware of social distance.

“You sat too close to the woman, is she your wife? One of the police men asked me and I responded in affirmation but they asked us to get down and the rest is history.” The couple who also craved for anonymity said he won’t say more as People & Politics inquired further.
