Defending Premier League champion Manchester City was stunned by newly-promoted Norwich, losing 3-2 on a thrilling evening at Carrow Road that the 27,000 spectators in attendance will likely never forget.

Two goals in the first 10 minutes of the first-half from Kenny McLean and Todd Cantwell gave Norwich a healthy lead inside half an hour, before Sergio Aguero scored just before half time to give the visitors hope.

However, that hope was soon extinguished, thanks a defensive howler from Nicolas Otamendi, who dawdled on the ball to allow Emiliano Buendia to dispossess him and set up goal machine Teemu Pukki.

New summer-signing Rodri pulled a late goal back with a shot from the edge of the area, but Norwich held on for a famous victory.

Norwich City manager, Daniel Farke, said “Of course it is special day for us and for the club. Against one of the best teams in the world and when we have so many injuries.

“We have so much passion from our owners and we couldn’t ask for more from them so this win is for them.

“We had to be special in our plan for City because they are the best team in the world but we had setbacks too with our injuries, but we deserve the win today we were exceptional.

“(Ibrahim) Amadou was beautiful today playing in an unusual positon and a debut for Alex Tettey and Sam Byram too. I can’t praise the lads enough today. We had so many things too overcome.

“Teemu (Pukki) was brilliant, not only because of his goals but for his work rate too. Teemu always thinks about the team first which is why he deserves all of the praise.

“We want to win each and every game and we will try to defend. But with our philosophy we cannot just press a button and park the bus, we have to go with what we’ve got and what we believe in which is being on the front foot. But today it wasn’t possible to dominate the ball today so we had a special plan and thankfully it worked well.”

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola has congratulated Norwich. “Congrats to Norwich. The first goal was from a set-piece and the second on the counter so credit to them. It is what it is. We have to learn from this and carry on.

“Our passing was not bad. We created chances but we could not score them today. They are a really good team with good players with quality; we saw that in the Championship last year, they were clinical today.

“We did not have urgency in the final third that we normally have. In football you can’t always avoid mistakes. I don’t know how many shots we had or how many they had, but football is about goals and about what you do in the boxes.”
