The Inspector General, IG of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has cautioned his men against the use of brute force in the discharge of their duties, noting that modern policing required intellect, respect for extant laws, civility to citizens, knowledge, and sound professional judgement.

He said the engagement of intelligence-led and technology-guided policing strategies, as well as the renewed commitment of personnel to their mandates, had led to a drastic reduction in crime across the country.

Speaking while decorating 13 newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police at the Force headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Adamu said his administration inherited some security threats including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, cybercrime and cultism, which he said were being addressed.

The IG admonished the new AIGs to rededicate themselves to their duties, noting that their promotion was guided by the principles of seniority and merit, which he said were “a clear testimony to the new focus of my leadership in relation to promotion policy.”

The police boss stated that more demand and responsibility would also be placed on the senior officers.

“In order to sustain this achievement, some of you, the newly promoted officers, shall be deployed to critical policing posts where your strength of character and professionalism shall be optimally tested,” he said.

Adamu noted, “In the discharge of your duties, however, you should appreciate that modern policing is no longer driven by the application of brute force, but the deployment of intellect, respect for extant laws, civility to citizens, knowledge, and sound professional judgement.”

The IG further told the newly decorated AIGs that Nigerians would be looking up to them to exhibit the sterling qualities which informed their elevation as they assumed the responsibilities attached to their new career status.

“I trust that you shall not fail the Force, neither will you fail the nation in this arduous national duty call,” Adamu told the officers.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the AIG in charge of Zone 8, Lokoja, Yakubu Babas promised that the men would deliver on their responsibilities.
