The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Tonye Isenah, has been impeached.
Bayelsa House of Assembly was on Monday invaded by hoodlums who started shooting indiscriminately.
The violence follows an alleged attempt by a faction of the house to impeach Isenah who is expected to resign today following pressure mounted on him by some Peoples Democratic Party leaders to quit his position ahead of the November 16th governorship election.
But a media Aide to Isenah, Ranami Afagha, said the impeachment of his boss would not stand as it was done against the standing rules of the House.
Afagha said the mace of the House was violently taken away by thugs, adding that since the symbol of authority was not in the House activities of those who purportedly removed his boss were illegal and unconstitutional.
“Those who don’t want peace said they removed speaker without the presence of the mace.”
People & Politics gathered that Obolo’s emergence came shortly after sounds of gunshots were heard in the Assembly complex as the immediate past speaker allegedly disappeared with the mace.
Report says the invasion is connected to the unfolding leadership crisis of the legislative arm over pressure on the Speaker, Tonye Isenah to resign so as to pave the way for the election of the incumbent Majority Leader of the House.
Mr Isenah had on Friday disclosed to his colleagues and workers of the House of Assembly that he would resign today but as the lawmakers were having a closed door session, the gunmen stormed the chamber and made away with the Mace.
Mr Monday Obolo of southern Ijaw 2 is now the new speaker of the house.
